How We Test

Our goal is simple: produce results you can replicate at home. We standardize environments, instruments, and procedures so quietness, space efficiency, ergonomics, and connectivity are measured—not guessed.

Test environment and controls We document room dimensions and floor type (suspended wood subfloor vs. slab), measure a 60‑second noise floor before each session, and keep HVAC and appliances off during runs. Microphone and vibration sensor placements are fixed for all machines. Testers warm up for five minutes to stabilize stroke.

Quietness and vibration

  • Sound: We use a calibrated sound level meter (A‑weighted, slow response) positioned 1 m lateral from the handle at mid‑stroke height. We record Leq for 60 seconds at 18, 24, and 30 spm plus peak values. We also take a reading at 3 m to simulate adjacent‑room perception.
  • Vibration: An accelerometer on the floor under the front foot measures vertical acceleration to characterize transmission through common floor types. We repeat with three isolation options (rubber mat, foam/rubber hybrid, and riser blocks) and publish the deltas.

Space, storage, and stability

  • Footprint: We measure in‑use dimensions and safe clearance for elbow/handle travel. For storage, we document stowed dimensions, required ceiling height, and path through a 30‑inch doorway.
  • Lift and latch: Using a luggage scale, we record the peak lift force to secure upright storage and assess hinge/latch safety.
  • Stability: With a metronome‑guided 30 spm effort, we note yaw/sway and seat rail deflection, then recheck on different mats.

Ergonomics and fit mapping We test with athletes from approximately 5'2" to 6'5" and inseams spanning ~27–37 inches. We map full compression/extension points, heel cup range, footplate angles, handle diameter/shape, seat contour, and rail height. Comfort is logged over 20‑ and 40‑minute sessions to catch hotspots that quick demos miss.

Connectivity and data integrity We verify open standards (Bluetooth FTMS/ANT+) and test HR strap pairing stability. We check that sessions sync to Apple Health, Strava, and Garmin through at least one supported app without forced subscriptions. We monitor cadence, pace, and distance consistency across apps to ensure progress is comparable to gym benchmarks.

Setup, maintenance, and durability We time unboxing and assembly, track tool requirements, and note tricky steps. We list maintenance items (belt/chain care, rail cleaning, hardware checks) with realistic intervals. Durability indicators include parts access, common fastener types, and availability of wear items (seats, straps, bearings).

Scoring model Our default weighting reflects apartment priorities: Quietness 35%, Space/Storage 20%, Ergonomics 20%, Connectivity 15%, Ownership (setup, maintenance, warranty, parts) 10%. We publish scenario‑based scores when a user values one factor more (e.g., maximum quietness for late‑night use).

Repeatability and uncertainty We run each noise/vibration trial in triplicate and report medians. If results vary due to floor resonance, we note the uncertainty and recommend mitigation. Firmware or hardware revisions trigger re‑testing and updated notes dated on the review page.

Ethics We do not modify units beyond safe setup. Loaned units receive the same tests and are returned after evaluation. Brands cannot preview or edit conclusions. Affiliate revenue never changes rankings.
